Established in 1807, the City of Lorain Utilities Department is currently obtaining its supply from a surface water source: the central basin of Lake Erie, west of Black River Harbor. This water comes via the Detroit River from all the upper lakes -- Superior, Michigan, and Huron -- the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, and numerous tributaries.
