The City Of Ferndale Water Department provides water for about 14,300 residents living in the Ferndale area in Whatcom County, Washington. The City Of Ferndale Water Department collects groundwater from two wells located in the Vashon-Olympia (V-O) Aquifer and one well in the Possession-Whidbey (P-W) Aquifer. The groundwater in the V-O aquifer appears to be semi-confined to confined by an overlying thick sequence of fine-grained glacial sediments in western Whatcom County's Mountain View and Boundary uplands. The P-W aquifer's groundwater is found at greater depths and is heavily confined by glacial and non-glacial sediments with low permeability. The water from both aquifers is softened and treated with chlorine at the City's treatment plant to protect against microbial contaminants.
